Local History of Southwark
Located on the southern banks of the River Thames, Southwark dates back to the 10th century and was previously known by other names including Sudweca, meaning "southern defensive work" and claims the lengthiest history of any other part of London. After the Romans settled in Londinium (Roman London), the first bridge across the River Thames was built. In 2022, a well-preserved Roman mosaic was discovered by the Museum of London Archaeology, believed to date back to A.D. 175-225.
The Globe Theatre was erected in 1599 by the Lord Chamberlain's Men, built using timber. The theatre famously set alight during a performance but was rebuilt a year later. A modern-day reconstruction is present today, known as "Shakespeare's Globe".
The original Globe Theatre welcomed performances such as Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and Othello during its time. Shakespeare was a proud Londoner and resided in Bankside in 1599, probably close to the Globe Theatre.
Borough Market also holds a long history. One of Southwark's oldest establishments, the market is believed to date back over 1000 years, serving travellers coming in and out of the city. The market was closed in 1754 due to the levels of congestion caused however, it was reopened in 1756 and has remained open since. The bustling market is a firm favourite with Londoners to this day.
