History
The history of the Royal Docks is incredibly interesting as it has seen a variety of highs and lows over the last century. The three docks were finally completed between 1855 and 1921 and brought nothing but good things to the city as it fast became London’s main dock in the beginning of the 21st century. The Royal Docks was home to refrigerated warehouses, granaries and other industrial buildings. However, things changed in 1926 when the general strikes in London cut off the electricity supply which was a threat to the mammoth amount of frozen meat that was being kept in the warehouses. Fortunately, the Royal Navy came to the rescue and used the generators of a few submarines to produce power for the warehouses. The Royal Docks were also affected extremely badly by bombing in the Second World War and ultimately closed to commercial traffic in 1981 which caused a lot of upset and unemployment.
Food and Drink
A trip to the Royal Docks means that you are in for some pleasing culinary delights, as there is such an impressive range of cuisines to choose from. Fancy some Lebanese? Then Al Masar is the place to go because it offers up some delicious and authentic Lebanese food and you get to enjoy it while taking in a beautiful riverside view. For something a little more simple yet satisfying then The Crystal Café is a wonderful choice. It is an award-winning restaurant that sits overlooking Royal Victoria Dock and is located within popular attraction The Crystal. It offers an excellent selection of home-made salads, bistro-style sandwiches, and freshly baked cakes and treats.
There are also various places to go and enjoy some cocktails, such as the trendy W XYZ bar which is a place to be excited about because it is so versatile, offering both cool acoustic music, which you can bop away to, or upbeat DJs so you can cut some shapes with your friends. Docklands Bar and Grill is another restaurant that lovers of the river should all visit; the floor to ceiling windows allow for fabulous views of the river and Canary Wharf, making your dining experience all the more pleasurable. The menu consists of a mix of British and European food as well as a tempting array of cocktails to choose from.
