History
The history of the Royal Docks is incredibly interesting as it has seen a variety of highs and lows over the last century. The three docks were finally completed between 1855 and 1921 and brought nothing but good things to the city as it fast became London’s main dock in the beginning of the 21st century. The Royal Docks was home to refrigerated warehouses, granaries and other industrial buildings. However, things changed in 1926 when the general strikes in London cut off the electricity supply which was a threat to the mammoth amount of frozen meat that was being kept in the warehouses. Fortunately, the Royal Navy came to the rescue and used the generators of a few submarines to produce power for the warehouses. The Royal Docks were also affected extremely badly by bombing in the Second World War and ultimately closed to commercial traffic in 1981 which caused a lot of upset and unemployment.
